President's news

Greetings,

As we begin the Monsoon season here in the desert southwest just a reminder that most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles, remember to turn around, don't drown.  And if you encounter a dust storm, pull off the road immediately.  Turn off your headlights and taillights, put your vehicle in "PARK” and take your foot off the brake (others may follow your taillights and hit your vehicle from behind).

The June Chapter Meeting was very well attended and Thomas Crane, Resilience Consulting Director at Everbridge did an outstanding job leading the group through a Tabletop Exercise involving issues impacting a voting tabulation machine company on elections day.  The chapter also donated $150 to our hosts Breakthrough T1D to assist with their type 1 diabetes research and advocacy, helping to make everyday life better while driving toward cures until type 1 diabetes is a thing of the past.

Our chapter board elections will be held in the fall, and I wanted to let you know what each of the board position’s roles are:

  • President (Executive Committee) - The president is the principle executive officer for chapter.
  • Secretary (Executive Committee) - The Chapter Secretary is responsible for recording all Chapter activities and maintaining all Chapter records.
  • Treasurer (Executive Committee) - The Treasurer is responsible for recording all chapter financial activities and maintaining all financial records.
  • Program Director - The Program Director is responsible for the planning and delivery of chapter membership meetings, and for project management of the Member Appreciation Meeting.
  • Membership Director – The Membership Director is responsible for maintaining a current listing of all chapter members and providing monthly reports for renewals, new members, and meeting attendance.
  • Information Director – The Information Director is responsible for managing and maintaining a repository of materials and reference information about the chapter, business continuity and disaster planning profession.
  •  Web Resources Director - The Web Director is responsible for maintaining the chapter website and other professional sites, e.g., social media sites.
  • Public Relations Director - The Public Relations Director is responsible for representing the chapter at seminars, conventions, and public presentations and seeking renewal (or new) sponsorships.
  • President Elect – The President - Elect is responsible for presiding at chapter and executive committee meetings if the President is not available.  Also, leading the nominating committee and Membership Appreciation Meeting committee.
  • Past President - The Past President is responsible for organizing the Membership Appreciation Meeting and backing up the President / President Elect if they are unavailable.

If you are interested in serving on the board in either of these positions contact any of the current board members, we will be happy to discuss the responsibilities and time investment.

The Member Appreciation Committee is still looking for volunteers to help plan and conduct the Member Appreciation Meeting on October 3, 2024.  If you enjoy party planning this is the event for you, and we could use the help.

Thanks to our Platinum Sponsors MHA Associates and our Gold Sponsor Infinite Blue.  They support our high quality and varied programs with their generous support.  If you need, or anticipate the need of any of their services, reach out, they can provide solutions to a wide range of issues.

SUMMARY: Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are cross-disability non-profit organizations typically run by and for people with disabilities. Their goal is to ensure that people who have disabilities have the necessary supports to live a life of independence in their own homes. People who have disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to be injured or die in a disaster. Often during disasters people who have disabilities are forced into nursing homes and never return to their own homes. CILs can assist in emergencies in multiple ways to ensure that people who have disabilities maintain their independence throughout the disaster cycle.
